Got me a new lens - A Voitlander 58mm f/1.4 in a Nikon mount. You can clearly see the size difference between an f/1.4 and a f/1.8 respectively (both set wide open). Keep in mind that aperture sizes are focal length dependent, so to be fair, the nikkor on the right would have a smaller aperture even at 1.4. But you get the picture... (pun!)

My Aperture is bigger than your Aperture

Soon we humans will create an aperture so huge it will destroy us all!
ReplyDeleteHa, Roger thinks he is a human!
ReplyDeleteReally cool lens, by the way. Nice and fast! How close can it focus?
ReplyDeleteManual focus primes are my current drug. I love 'em.
Hey Marc, yeah, I'm loving the manual focus primes too. This one focuses as close as 1.5 feet, which isn't terribly close, but considering it scales up to 87mm on a cropped sensor, it's more than enough unless you're looking to do really closeup macro work. I haven't tried it out with my extension tubes yet though... wonder if that would work.
ReplyDeleteI am loving the manual ones too... although I seem to have a problem focusing, stupid eyes. If only I had some human eyes.
ReplyDeleteBottom left of your viewfinder... green circle when focused.
ReplyDeleteOh right, I was taught that during our camera outing, how quickly I forget :-(
ReplyDeleteIt's hard with glasses on, because with my eye that far from the viewfinder, I can't quite see that bottom corner.
ReplyDeleteI tested this lens mounted on a D700, and it has a really cool manual focus feature - when you're not in focus (ie: green circle not lit up), there are left and right arrows that light up telling you which way you need to turn the focus ring. It made manual focusing even in the dark really easy. Those two arrows alone make the $3000 worth it.
